FAQ

Questions

Where does this data come from?+

Every row is sourced from the U.S. Department of Labor's public Form 5500 series — the annual report ERISA-covered plans file with the EBSA. PlanOptica downloads the bulk dataset directly from the DOL, parses it through dbt, and republishes it with cleaned field names, normalized NAICS, and resolved sponsor identifiers.

How often is the data refreshed?+

Monthly. The Department of Labor republishes the bulk Form 5500 dataset about once a month; PlanOptica refreshes within a few days of each republish.

Why are the sample files limited to 20 rows?+

Samples are designed to validate the schema and let you see real data before you commit. We pick the 20 largest plans in the state by participant count so the sample is interesting rather than alphabetic. The full file is available to subscribers in one click.

Does the file include 5500-SF (small plan) filings?+

Yes. PlanOptica unions Form 5500 and Form 5500-SF into a single canonical filing per plan-year, so the CSV reflects the full universe — large plans, small plans, and 5500-EZ (where reported) — without you having to merge them.

Can I use this commercially?+

Yes. The underlying Form 5500 data is in the public domain. PlanOptica's derived columns (cleaned field names, normalized NAICS, resolved carrier/broker names, etc.) are licensed for personal and commercial use under attribution — link back to PlanOptica when you publish.

Is there a national / all-states file?+

Not today. Each state ships separately so individual files stay manageable. For bulk or programmatic access, see /data/custom.

What about historical years?+

The current file reflects the most recent filing year per plan. Multi-year history is available inside the app on each plan page; a historical CSV bundle is available via custom analytics.
